The Ghana Baseball and Softball Association (GBSA) officially launched the country’s first-ever National Baseball League on Friday, June 28, at Koshen Park, Labone Senior High School in Accra.
Speaking at the event, GBSA President Ernest Danso described the launch as a significant milestone in the development of baseball in Ghana.
He said the league would serve not only as a competitive platform but also as a means to identify and nurture local talent.
“This league is a platform for talent discovery, a channel for growth, and a statement that Ghana is ready to take its place on the continental and global stage,” Mr Danso said.
He recounted the sport’s humble beginnings in Ghana, where coaches and volunteers relied on improvised equipment and trained on unmarked school fields. He credited the sport’s gradual growth to persistence and belief in the values of baseball, including teamwork, discipline, and opportunity.
Mr Danso revealed that the GBSA plans to expand the league to include youth, women’s, and school divisions. The federation also aims to qualify for international tournaments and construct standard baseball fields across all regions of the country.
“This is only the beginning. We aim not just to participate but to lead,” he stated, urging government and private sector stakeholders to support baseball as a tool for youth development and national pride.
Ghana Olympic Committee President Richard Akpokavie, who was also present, commended the initiative and encouraged young athletes to embrace the values of excellence, respect, and friendship.
“Sports have the power to shape young people into better individuals - for themselves, their families, and the nation,” Mr Akpokavie said.
