The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of presiding over an alarming surge in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in recent months.
Speaking at a press conference held on Tuesday at the party’s headquarters in Accra, Mr Kodua claimed that the scale of environmental destruction witnessed under the NDC government in the past six months is without precedent.
"What we are witnessing in the last six, seven months of the NDC government is unprecedented."
Mr Frimpong accused members of the NDC of being part of the menace, "The manner in which the people associated with the NDC, their party executives, their members, are moving around freely and going into our forest reserves, going into our water bodies to do galamsey is alarming."
Mr Kodua challenged the NDC to demonstrate transparency in its handling of the crisis and called on Ghanaians to hold the government accountable.
