On Newsfile today, Parliament stalls, cyber critics roar, and the nation’s top prosecutor takes the gloves off. Ghana’s governance system is being tested on three fronts: the courts, the internet, and the corridors of power.
The first battlefront is Parliament, where the Minority Caucus is pushing to block the vetting of Chief Justice-nominee Paul Baffoe-Bonnie. Their argument? Ongoing legal disputes involving the former Chief Justice make the process unconstitutional and premature.
The Majority insists that due process is being followed, but critics warn that fast-tracking the vetting risks deepening public distrust in the judiciary. So, is this a defense of judicial integrity or political brinkmanship disguised as principle?
Then, the nation’s digital frontier faces a new power struggle. The Cybersecurity (Amendment) Bill, 2025 proposes sweeping new powers for the Cyber Security Authority, from prosecuting cyber-offences to seizing digital assets.
Supporters call it “a necessary modernization” in an age of AI-driven threats, but digital-rights advocates say it’s a step toward surveillance and censorship. Are we safeguarding cyberspace or surrendering privacy in the name of protection?
And finally, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) takes centre stage once again. Following a fiery press briefing, the OSP says charges are ready against former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and five others over the SML-GRA contract saga, a case expected in court before month-end.
But legal analysts are asking: if the evidence is ready, why the press show? Critics argue the OSP’s public strategy could jeopardize due process, while supporters hail it as bold transparency in a system long clouded by secrecy.
Join Samson Lardy Anyenini on JoyNews and MyJoyOnline as we unpack Parliament’s judicial standoff, the cybersecurity debate reshaping Ghana’s digital freedoms, and the OSP’s explosive corruption pursuit.
