The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has congratulated the former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on his victory in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries, but maintained that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) can defeat him in any general election contest.
He made this known during his address to Parliament at the commencement of the first sitting of the first meeting of the second session.
Mr Ayariga spoke as Members of Parliament from both sides of the House wore white to symbolically congratulate Dr Bawumia on his emergence as the NPP’s flagbearer.
“I join my colleagues in the Minority to wear white today to also congratulate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia,” the Majority Leader said on the floor of Parliament.
“But the Bawumia that I know, NDC can beat him any day. His record is there for all to see.”
Mr Ayariga, whose party, the NDC, is currently in government, argued that Dr Bawumia’s record as former Vice President would remain a major obstacle to his presidential ambitions.
He suggested that the policies associated with Dr Bawumia’s tenure continue to attract criticism from the Ghanaian public.
He further stated that with the NPP now in opposition, the contrast between governance under the NDC and the previous administration would become clearer to voters.
According to him, the NDC remains confident that its performance in government will resonate with the electorate and strengthen its position ahead of future elections.
While extending congratulations to Dr Bawumia and the NPP for a successful primary, the Majority Leader stressed that internal party victories do not guarantee success at the national level.
He reaffirmed the NDC’s belief that it has the credibility, record and public support to defeat the NPP’s flagbearer at the polls.
