The Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has justified its participation in the Electoral Commission’s pilot registration for a new voters’ register.
Elvis Afriyie Ankrah says their participation in the just ended exercise have informed their arguments against compilation of the new roll.
Speaking to JoyNews’ AM Show Wednesday, Mr. Afriyie Ankrah mounted fresh claims of unpreparedness from the EC in their much desired quest.
According to him, the machines – which the EC told them are new – broke down frequently during the exercise, raising questions on their authenticity and purported newness.
He said the EC officials also faced issued with the machines’ batteries.
“They had to plug the machines before they would work,” he said, adding once the external power source is removed, they machines go off.
He added, in some cases, the registration of one person took up to 40 minutes.
Also, the guarantor process was botched, Mr Afriyie Ankrah argued.
He said all these challenges go to feed to their arguments that there is no need for a new register; insisting the existing one is credible.
The NDC Director of Elections said they were only able to arrive at these conclusions after fully participating in the process.
“We didn’t want a situation where you don’t participate and you go making complaints,” he said.
Besides these challenges, Mr Afriyie Ankrah said the Commission has failed to provide the NDC with details of how the registration exercise would go.
He said the activities of the EC has thus far been clouded which does not augur well for the upcoming elections.
These allegations, however, the EC touted the two-day piloting exercise as a success.
The Commission has since set June 30 to begin compiling the new register with its C.I. allowing only the Ghana card and passport being the only primary documents for proof of eligibility.
But the NDC has promised more legal action against the upcoming exercise.
