The Vice President and Flagbearer of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has reminded the people of Obuasi how the mining company AngloGold Ashanti collapsed during the tenure of former President Mahama.
Addressing a large crowd on Tuesday during his tour of the Obuasi East Constituency, Dr Bawumia highlighted what he described as the deterioration of many sectors under former President Mahama, who served between 2012 and 2017. He listed a number of institutions and initiatives which he claimed collapsed during Mahama's leadership.
One of these, he noted, was AngloGold Ashanti, which halted operations in Ghana in 2014 due to severe financial losses but was reopened in 2019 under the NPP government.
“I am going into this election against someone who has been President before – former President Mahama,” Dr Bawumia told the energised crowd.
“During his time as President, he told us the country was broke under his watch, and because of that, so many things went wrong. He couldn’t provide for Ghanaians, and he cancelled numerous initiatives,” Dr Bawumia continued, reminding Obuasi residents of the NPP’s role in reviving AngloGold.
“Didn’t AngloGold Ashanti collapse during his presidency? AngloGold left, and the company folded. It took us, the NPP, to bring it back. It was under our leadership that we revived it,” he said.
Dr Bawumia asserted that the example of reviving AngloGold, which had shut down under the NDC and Mahama, reflected the NPP’s superior governance compared to the NDC, particularly under Mahama’s administration.
“We have done far better, and he cannot match us in any sector. We have created more jobs, revived more companies, built more schools, constructed more airports, public libraries, and much more.”
Dr Bawumia concluded by saying, “The former President knows he cannot compare his record to ours, which is why he has avoided any debate on issues and achievements with me.”
