Football legend, Asamoah Gyan, announced his retirement from professional football on Tuesday, June 20 at the age of 37.
The iconic striker is hanging his boots after an illustrious career that started at Liberty Professionals in 2003, taking him to 10 other clubs across the globe.

Ghana’s record goal scorer
After storming onto the international scene to make his debut as a 17-year-old against Somalia and scoring, the former Sunderland striker netted an impressive 51 goals in 109 games for Ghana.
That leaves him six goals clear of Edward Acquah as the record scorer for Ghana in history.
Africa’s leading scorer at the FIFA World Cup
Featuring in 11 games at the 2006, 2010, and 2014 World Cups, Asamoah Gyan has six goals to his name, making him Africa’s top scorer in the history of the of the competition.
Ghanaian player with most World Cup appearances (joint)
Alongside Andre Ayew, Gyan is the Ghanaian with the most appearances at the FIFA World Cup finals. Both have played at three tournaments, with Gyan’s coming at the 2006, 2010, and 2014 World Cups.
Andre made his debut at the Mundial in 2010, making further appearances at the 2014 and 2022 World Cups, with his 10 games trailing Gyan by one.
First player to score in 9 consecutive tournaments
Since making his major tournament debut at the 2006 World Cup, Asamoah Gyan has scored at every tournament he has played in up to the 2017 AFCON, making him the first in history to score at nine consecutive tournaments.
However, Portuguese great, Cristiano Ronaldo levelled the record in 2021 and surpassed it at the 2022 World Cup.
2nd most appearances in AFCON history
Asamoah Gyan has played at 7 different AFCONs, the second most tournaments played by a single player in the competition’s history. Only Rigobert Song (Cameroon) and Ahmed Hassan (Egypt) have played more (8).
