The governing New Patriotic Party NPP says polling centers where foreigners were captured unto the electoral roll during the just-ended voters' registration exercise were facilitated by officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
NPP General Secretary John Boadu alleged that NDC’s Johnson Asiedu Nketia orchestrated the registration of over 60 Ivorians at Banda Kabrono in the Bono Region.
He said the NDC general secretary was "intimidating and to some extent insulting the police by insisting that these people must be allowed to register."
"Unfortunately for him as they finished registering and were returning, the tyre got burst and the security agencies were alerted. They and realised that 66 Ivorians had managed to cross with the help of Asiedu Nketia ad hos party to register and vote in the upcoming," Mr Boadu said.
Speaking at a press conference, he cited instances where NDC officials threatened violence if Electoral Commission (EC) officials deny foreigners the opportunity to participate in the process.
This is the latest in the tirade of accusations traded among two of the biggest political parties in the regard as the EC brought the exercise to a close on Sunday.
Mr Boadu further indicated that the act of vigilance on the part of the NPP has reduced votes in border towns where foreigners usually cross to register for the Voters’ Identification Card.
"I must use this occasion to thank our polling station agents for their vigilance and some of them ended up getting wounded in the process. I think more of these pictures are there," he added.
