Samson Adamu of Nigeria has been appointed interim General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), following the resignation of Véron Mosengo-Omba.
The appointment, which was confirmed after approval by CAF’s Executive Committee and Congress at a meeting in Cairo on Sunday, places Adamu in charge of the organisation’s day-to-day administration.
CAF vice-presidents will now oversee the process of identifying and appointing a substantive General Secretary in the coming months.
Mosengo-Omba’s resignation brings an end to a tenure that had come under increasing pressure in recent months.
His departure followed the conclusion of an investigation by Swiss authorities into allegations of financial misconduct, which was ultimately closed due to a lack of evidence.
In a statement released confirming his exit, Mosengo-Omba said:
“After over 30 years of an international professional career dedicated to promoting an ideal form of football that brings people together, educates, and creates opportunities for hope, I have decided to step down from my position as Secretary General of CAF to devote myself to more personal projects.
“Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions that some people have gone to great lengths to cast on me, I can retire with peace of mind and without constraint, leaving the CAF more prosperous than ever.”
Meanwhile, CAF has faced criticism over a number of recent decisions, including the controversial ruling to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and award Morocco a 3-0 victory after the final result was overturned.
Questions have also been raised about governance following the late postponement of a Women’s AFCON.
