The Central North Regional Police Command says it has successfully concluded a three-day intensive capacity-building and high-risk tactical training for 80 security personnel at Assin Fosu, aimed at strengthening security ahead of the New Patriotic Party presidential primary.

The participants comprised 70 officers, 10 each drawn from seven police districts in the Central North Region, and 10 officers from the Ghana Immigration Service.

The training was facilitated by experienced security experts from the National Police Headquarters in Accra, who were deployed to equip participants with practical, field-oriented, and election-related security skills.

A total of 211,849 delegates are expected to vote at 333 polling centres across 276 constituencies nationwide, with polls opening at 7am and closing at 2pm.

The aspirants include former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong, Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and a former general secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.

Speaking at the end of the training last Wednesday, the Central North Regional Police Commander, DCOP Abraham Acquaye, said the programme was designed to enhance the operational readiness, professionalism, and tactical competence of personnel to effectively respond to any security eventuality.

DCOP Acquaye said the beneficiary units included the Formed Police Unit (FPU) and other operational teams, whose participation was expected to enhance inter-agency coordination, tactical deployment and overall effectiveness in maintaining law and order during election-related duties and other security operations.

He said the course focused on tactical operations, public order management, border patrol duties, and other critical operational skills to ensure officers are adequately prepared to manage challenges that may arise before, during, and after the elections.

He further stated that the exercise would significantly boost officers’ confidence and enable them to effectively counter any threats capable of undermining the peace before, during and after the primaries and future security operations.

DCOP Acquaye explained that the initiative aligned with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police to build a highly professional, disciplined and well-equipped police service capable of safeguarding public safety and maintaining peace, particularly during major national political activities.to promote a coordinated, tactical and professional approach to election security in collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service.

The Central North Regional Police Commander further cautioned supporters of various political aspirants to remain law-abiding and refrain from acts that could disturb the peace, stressing that the security agencies are well-equipped to deal with any eventuality.

The Deputy Central North Regional Commander, ACP Felicia Ayesu, encouraged the participants to remain guided by the lessons acquired and to continuously practise the skills learned to ensure heightened efficiency and professionalism as the election period approaches.
