Former Black Stars coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has embarked on a new chapter in his illustrious career, having been appointed as a technical consultant for youth players' development by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
In this new role, Akonnor will contribute his extensive knowledge and experience to nurturing the next generation of African football stars.
Akonnor, who notably guided Ghana to qualify for the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), will commence his duties immediately by participating in the CAF African Schools Football Championship finals in Zanzibar.
This prestigious tournament, which showcases young talent from over 44 African countries, involves more than 800,000 boys and girls under the age of 15.
In addition to his advisory role, Akonnor will provide commentary on the matches, offering his insights and professional evaluations of the young talents.
His presence is expected to be a significant asset, not only for the players but also for the coaching staff and organisers involved in the championship.
The competition in Zanzibar, starting on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, will be the first major event where Akonnor will execute his new responsibilities.
His involvement in such a formative competition underscores CAF's commitment to elevating youth football across the continent and ensuring a robust pipeline of talent for future generations.
Akonnor’s appointment is seen as a strategic move by CAF to leverage his experience and success at both national and international levels, thereby enhancing the development programs and providing young athletes with the guidance needed to excel.
His insights are expected to shape the developmental pathways of many aspiring footballers, potentially impacting the future of African football profoundly.
This competition brings together talented young players from across the continent, providing them a platform to showcase their skills and passion for the game.
Akonnor will help in creating a career path for these youngsters.
