A political historian at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof Samuel Adu Gyamfi, says a decline in public trust of state institutions threatens peace and security.
He believes enforcing discipline and independence of state institutions are fundamental in ensuring national development.
"The Electoral Commission, court, and other independent institutions should be allowed to operate without control from any government. This is what has reduced the trust," Prof Adu-Gyamfi told Nhyira FM.
He indicated that the most critical institutions such as the security agencies and the judiciary must ensure dignity and fairness in the discharge of their duties to maintain public trust and confidence in them.
"Our police, military and courts are very important for our peace and security. The declining trend of public confidence in these institutions is dangerous. How did we get here?" he quizzed.
He reiterated the need for the government and its agencies to improve the current trend of waning public trust in state institutions.
"We need to work on improving our style of governance and the courts, security and other agencies should display attitudes that can earn them public trust," said Prof. Adu-Gyamfi.
