The ruling New Patriotic Party has called on the opposition National Democratic Congress to expel its Suame Youth Organiser for allegedly inciting violence ahead of the 2024 general election.
According to the NPP, this will be most credible way for the NDC to prove that it does not subscribe to violence.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, the NPP's Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, argued that the comments of the Youth Organiser, Razak Kaumpa, are a direct reflection of the NDC's violent orientation.
According to him, contrary to claims that the party official spoke in jest, he believes that the said comments had the backing of the NDC.
Mr Ahiagbah therefore insisted that in order for the NDC to show that it does not tolerate violence, the party must publicly disassociate from the comments of the Suame Youth Organiser and expel him accordingly.
"We demand the NDC to unreservedly disavow, disassociate and expel this young from their party without delay.
"That's the only point we can begin to take the NDC seriously about these comments that the young man has made as though that they're not shielding him and they really want to discourage such commentary in our politics. Nothing short if this will suffice", Mr Ahiagbah stressed.
"We believe this about the NDC. That the statement that the Youth Organiser made is not in isolation or did he misspeak. He was clear-eyed about what he was saying
"His remarks reflect the culture and ethos of the NDC. We expect the Police and the Court to bring the Suame Youth Organiser to justice quickly to deter Other who might be harbouring other similar violent and delinquent thoughts in the NDC", he added.
In a video earlier in the week, Razak Kaumpa, was heard urging members of the NDC to visit mayhem on their NPP counterparts in the 2024 general election next year.
The activist reportedly called on his colleague NDC members to deal violently with any NPP supporter who will attempt to obstruct the victory of the NDC at the polls.
The comments, which subsequently went viral, came to the attention of the Police who issued a statement indicating their readiness to apprehend Razak to assist with investigations.
The NDC later handed over Razak to the Suntreso District Command in Kumasi on Wednesday, amidst a crowd of party supporters expressing their solidarity.
Razak is expected to appear in court today, Thursday, February 9 for onward prosecution.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, has called on the Police to pardon the party’s Suame Youth Organiser for allegedly inciting violence.
According to Mr. Gyamfi, the ‘young man misspoke and must be pardoned’.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Sammy Gyamfi explained that, the comments by the NDC activist were borne out of the “pain he and other NDC supporters have suffered in the hands of NPP thugs in the Ashanti Region over the years”.
While calling on the Police to pardon the utterances of the accused, he also implored the police to “focus on arresting NPP bandits and terrorists who have attacked a Court of competent jurisdiction in Kumasi and have actually maimed and killed several innocent Ghanaians”.
He further advised the party’s supporters “to continue to exercise restraint and not allow the fact that President Akufo-Addo rode to power on the back of so much bloodshed and barbarity to make them want to mimic Nana Akufo-Addo and his very violent political party”.
Despite his caution, he took a swipe at the Police and members of the New Patriotic Party who have criticised the Suame Youth Organiser and also queried the 'hypocrisy' of the Police for selectively dealing with matters involving unsavoury public commentary.
