Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association, Henry Asante Twum, has revealed the GFA is investigating alleged football match-fixing involving some clubs.
The 2020/21 season of the Ghana premier league was rocked with match-fixing and betting allegations in the last round of matches after Ashanti Gold SC beat Inter Allies FC by 7-0 in a match-day 34 game played at the Obuasi Len Clay Sports stadium.
A player of Inter Allies Hashmin Musah admitted on live radio he deliberately scored two own goals in the game to change the result of what would have been a fixed match.
The GFA, therefore, instituted investigations into that particular game with players and officials of both clubs invited to face the FA’s special investigation team.
The investigation will ascertain if there were any violations of the relevant provisions of the GFA Code of Ethics, 2019, the Premier League Regulations, 2019 and the GFA Disciplinary Code, 2019.
Contributing on the subject of football betting on the Kickoff Show on Luv Fm, the FA scribe revealed they are probing results of other premier league matches.
“Getting to the latter part of the season we started receiving reports of fixed matches. But sometimes when you receive such reports it's always fair you put your ears on the ground and also look at factors and certain things that will make you believe the allegations, so u cannot act immediately. All you need to do is to put measures in place to see if you can lay hands on evidence or a lead to be able to follow up,” said Henry Asante Twum.
“I can say confidently that we may not have made certain things publicly yet but we are looking into some other games. Yes, some other games aside from the Inter Allies versus Ashgold,” he stressed.
Henry Asante Twum further revealed that the FA is cautious in going public with such reports because it takes time before culprits are exposed.
“We received different reports but the integrity of the game is very important so once you receive those reports, first we look at the reports that came and the outcome of the match. When we receive such reports, they tell you the game will end this way or that way and this player or that player will score or whatever. But let me not give out too much information because we are still digging,” he said.
