The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has yet to determine a new resumption date for the Ghana Premier League following the suspension of match week 20 fixtures.
The decision to postpone the weekend’s games comes after violent clashes during the match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko on Sunday, February 2, 2025, led to a tragic fatality.
According to GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum, the association is taking time to engage with relevant stakeholders and assess the full impact of the incident before deciding on the league’s return.
Speaking on Accra-based Max FM, Asante Twum confirmed that no timeline has been set for the resumption of the league but clarified that other competitions under the GFA’s jurisdiction will proceed as scheduled.
“At this point, the other competitions have not recorded any incidents. Nothing has happened in the other leagues. Also, we have a calendar to follow,” he explained.
He further justified the decision to temporarily halt the Premier League, emphasizing its importance as Ghana’s top-tier competition.
“When the executives met, they agreed that if there is an issue with the Premier League—our flagship competition—then it is best to put it on hold until all concerns are addressed and necessary measures are put in place,” he stated.
A final decision on the league’s resumption will be made after meetings with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and other key stakeholders.
The violent scenes in Nsoatre saw clashes between supporters of both clubs, leading to a lengthy stoppage before play eventually resumed.
Nsoatreman FC secured a 1-0 victory over Kotoko, but the match was overshadowed by a shocking act of hooliganism that resulted in the tragic death of Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley.
In response, Kotoko has suspended football-related activities until the perpetrators are brought to justice.
