NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, says Ghana’s politics must be anchored on a strict hierarchy of loyalty that puts the country ahead of party and personal ambition.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, Kwetey insisted he does not see leadership and politics through an individual lens, but through what benefits the wider group and the nation.
“I don’t look at these things as an individual thing at all,” he said. “This is always about the collective. It’s always about the collective.”
Kwetey argued that Ghana’s biggest challenge is that many people only proclaim collective interest in public, but abandon it when personal gain is at stake.
“I know that’s a tough one, because sadly, too many people believe that the interests of the individual must always be ahead of the interests of the collective,” he said.
He described it as a national habit: people speak about equality and shared progress, but quickly choose themselves when pressured to decide.
“Deep down, when it comes to the crunch, and we have to make a choice between personal interest and equality interest, too many people go for the personal rather than equality,” he stated.
The NDC General Secretary said his position is clear and non-negotiable.
“I absolutely believe that the group must always be number one. The individual must always be number two,” he stressed.
Kwetey extended the same principle to the relationship between party and country, insisting that patriotism must always override partisan loyalty.
“Even when it comes to the party in the country, I’m always very categorical. The country must always be number one and the party number two,” he said.
He acknowledged that this belief often triggers discomfort, even within political circles.
“That’s also is another place where a lot of people have issues,” he noted.
Kwetey said the principle becomes most important when leaders are forced to choose between national interest and party advantage.
“If it’s a choice between a decent country, it must always be Ghana,” he said.
He went further to outline the ultimate order of loyalty.
“If it’s a choice between Ghana and NDC and me, it must always be NBC fast,” he said.
Kwetey maintained that once this hierarchy is accepted, many internal political tensions will disappear.
“And once we understand that hierarchy, there will be no door issues,” he said.
He also argued that Ghana is increasingly rejecting “business as usual,” and voters are no longer easily deceived by short-term promises.
“I think this country, by and large, is tired of business as usual,” he said.
Fifi Kwetey said the last election reflected a deeper shift in public sentiment.
“What we saw in that election is simply a manifestation that the country is far, far, far more… discerning,” he stated.
He warned that politicians who still believe voters are easily manipulated will face repeated shocks.
“Those people are going to have increasing shock to realise that the people are not as gullible as they think they are,” he said.
According to him, Ghanaians now want “something more lasting, something more enduring,” and that demand will only grow.
