The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has officially commenced full 24-hour operations at the Tema and Takoradi ports, in direct response to the presidential directive aimed at establishing a 24-hour economy in Ghana.
This landmark move extends round-the-clock services beyond the already-operational ship-side activities to include key terminals such as Terminal 2, the Transit Terminal, the Reefer Terminal, and the Golden Jubilee Terminal. The development is expected to significantly improve cargo handling, reduce turnaround times, and enhance Ghana’s standing as a competitive maritime hub in West Africa.
Speaking at the inaugural National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving at the Port of Tema, the Director of Port of Tema, Tebon Zumah Esq., delivered remarks on behalf of the Director-General of GPHA, Brigadier General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono. He highlighted the strategic alignment between the national economic vision and the GPHA’s institutional transformation.
“While our ship-side operations have always run 24 hours, the directive challenges us to deepen this commitment by extending seamless services to shore-handling and allied processes,” Zumah stated.
He called on GPHA staff to adopt innovative and proactive approaches to support the national development agenda. The full activation of 24-hour services across the two ports, he noted, underscores GPHA’s resolve to enhance service delivery and foster economic growth.
In a symbolic gesture to conclude the prayer event, Mr Zumah officially declared the Port of Tema a fully operational 24-hour port, reinforcing the Authority’s dedication to national productivity and economic transformation.
Held under the theme “Reflect, Reset, and Renew for National Prosperity”, the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving brought together GPHA management, staff, and members of the clergy. The gathering featured scripture readings, intercessory prayers, and thanksgiving hymns, serving as both a spiritual and strategic call to action in support of Ghana’s future.
As GPHA continues to align with government policy, the expanded 24-hour operations at Tema and Takoradi ports are poised to play a vital role in facilitating trade, boosting investor confidence, and driving national prosperity.
