GPL: Four games to lookout for on matchday 17

Round one of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season draws to a conclusion this weekend.

Teams would love to head into the second round with momentum and good form.

Karela currently sit top ahead of the matchday but could fall to as low as fourth depending on results.

Hearts of Oak will begin life with Samuel Boadu as Asante Kotoko look to return to winning ways.

Here are four fixtures from matchday 17 of the Ghana Premier League you can’t afford to miss this weekend:

Elmina Sharks vs Asante Kotoko

Asante Kotoko know that winning their two games in hand will send them to the summit of the league.

That will serve as extra motivation for the Porcupine Warriors who drew 0-0 with rivals Hearts of Oak last matchday.

The Kumasi-based side are the third lowest scorers in the league and will need other players than Kwame Opoku to contribute upfront.

The last time Kotoko played Sharks away, the Porcupines lost by a solitary goal. Sharks themselves might struggle to replicate that result due to their poor form.

The Cape Coast based side are winless in their last six games and will need to be close to perfect to upset Kotoko.

Stadium: Ndoom Sports stadium, Cape Coast

Time: Friday, 18:00GMT

Prediction: Elmina Sharks 0-2 Asante Kotoko

Hearts of Oak vs WAFA

Hearts of Oak might have been handed a new lifeline under new coach Samuel Boadu.

Boadu, who took charge of the team will look to stabilise the team and try to challenge for the league in the second round.

The former Medeama coach has been promised to have full control affairs as the Phobians look to head into a new technical direction which would see scouting prioritised at the club.

Salifu Ibrahim, formerly of Eleven Wonders has been signed and will be in line to make his debut for the club as they face WAFA at home.

WAFA’s poor away form has been evident yet again this season. The Academy boys have picked up just four points from eight games on the road this season.

Heart’s home record has been just above average winning four out of eight but the Phobians have scored 17 goals in those games.

Stadium: Accra Sports stadium, Accra

Time: Sunday, 15:00GMT

Prediction: Hearts of Oak 3-1 WAFA

Dreams FC vs Great Olympics

Dreams FC have been ruthless at home this season making the Theatre of Dreams a dreaded venue for visitors.

The Still Believe boys have won their last five home games scoring 17 goals and conceding just four.

Joseph Esso seems to have regained his form as he currently sits joint top of the top scorer’s list with 10 goals.

Up next is a tricky tie against a very impressive Great Olympics who have been the dark horses this season.

The Wonder boys sit in second place heading into the end of the first round and will fancy their chances of fighting for the title.

However, they will need to achieve something they haven’t done in their last two away games and that’s to win.

Annor Walker’s men have the third best away record in the league but haven’t picked up any points in their last two attempts.

Stadium: Theatre of Dreams, Dawu

Time: Sunday, 15:00GMT

Prediction: Dreams FC 2-2 Great Olympics

Eleven Wonders vs Legon Cities

Legon Cities at the moment just can’t stop buying. The Royals have so far purchased Victorien Adebayor, Richmond Antwi, Hans Kwofie and Justice Anane in the second transfer window.

The club are also in the market for more players and have really laid down a statement of intent. Bashir Hayford has been given the tools to oil a side that is already warming up pretty well under their new coach.

The Accra-based side are unbeaten in seven games and have some momentum going. The next big task for Hayford will be to convert the draws to wins as his side have drawn four games in their unbeaten run.

Hans Kwofie has easily settled into the squad scoring three goals in his first two games.

Eleven Wonders continue to struggle with just three wins in 14 games. The club have also lost their key player Ibrahim who joined Hearts last week.

Coach Ignatius Fosu-Osei would need to find solutions to get his side firing again as they sit just two points above the relegation zone.

Stadium: Ohene Ameyaw stadium, Techiman

Time: Sunday, 15:00GMT

Prediction: Eleven Wonders 1-2 Legon Cities
