Bibiani Gold Stars are aiming to put a halt to Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s winning start to the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season when the two teams go face-to-face at the Dun’s Park on Friday, November 12.
The fixture will open the Premier League’s round of games in matchday three.
The newly-promoted side are on a fairytale run in their maiden campaign in Ghana’s top-flight after earning promotion. Gold Stars won their opening game of the season before digging deep in added time to snatch a draw against Medeama SC away from home.
Kotoko on the other side, is just one of two teams in the league to have won all two of their opening fixtures – the other being King Faisal.
Prosper Narteh Ogum’s side has had a blistering start to the new campaign with their success in both games coming in the last 10 minutes of the games against Dreams FC and Bechem United.
Having seen their fierce rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak had a troubling start to this campaign, the Porcupine Warriors are keen to take advantage of Hearts’ dip in form to extend their lead on top of the table, an opportunity that could prove pivotal at the end of the season.
However, after two unbeaten games in the league, Michael Osei’s men dream of beating Kotoko in their encounter at home to make a huge statement of what they are capable of achieving.
While both teams have no injury casualties ahead of the fixture, a national team assignment for Ismail Abdul Ganiyu means, the Kotoko captain is expected to miss the clash against the Miners.
Maxwell Agyemang could make his league debut for the Porcupines in the absence of the skipper with goalkeeper Razak Abalora donning the captain’s armband.
A win for Kotoko will see them move to nine points, three above second-placed King Faisal and five above Gold Stars. But a win for the Bibiani-based club will see them above Kotoko and occupy the top spot before Saturday and Sunday’s fixtures.
Friday’s game also promises to be the first ever encounter between Gold Stars and Asante Kotoko.
