Coach Nana Kwaku Agyemang says the best decision the Ghana Football Association (GFA) can take in its search for a new coach for the Black Stars is to pick Chris Hughton.
According to him, what the Ghana Black Stars needs in this current time is not another quick fix ahead of its match against Nigeria in its World Cup qualifiers, rather a long term plan which will see the team rebuilt.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, he noted that the selection of Otto Addo as coach will only be another stopgap approach which will not address the recent abysmal performance of the Black Stars.
He said, “My challenge is this, we’re always looking at the short-term gain. If we want to participate in the World Cup this time around, what will happen? Would Ghana come to a standstill? What would actually happen?”
“I support Chris Hughton because I’m not looking at what are we going to do for this Nigerian game. It’s not critical for me if the Ghana Black Stars doesn’t go there, because if they do go there what are they going to do? As it stands right now, we don’t have a team.
“Let’s be honest with ourselves, we can’t keep feeding this false diatribe to Ghanaian football lovers that we can do something, we can win cups because we can’t. We haven’t got it together yet. And I would prefer that we took a long-term approach to the whole matter and really starting to rebuild in earnest,” he elaborated.
According to him, a coach like Chris Hughton who has no familiarity with the players would be excellent with the team as this would allow him to be neutral and unbiased in his decisions as coach.
He was hopeful, that will also come in handy to stomp out all the bickering and division that have allegedly taken hold in the Black Stars.
This he says would be key to rebuilding the team.
“We’ve been saying rebuilding, we’ve used hundreds of players, we have gotten nowhere, this is our worst performance in over 60 years,” he said.
