President John Dramani Mahama has announced the reintroduction of the National Sanitation Day, calling on all Ghanaians to actively participate in monthly nationwide clean-up exercises to improve environmental hygiene and public health.
Speaking at the launch of the National Sanitation Day, Mr Mahama recalled the success of the original campaign which ran from 2014 to 2016, highlighting the power of citizen-led efforts in transforming communities.
“The success of the previous National Sanitation Day… demonstrated the immense potential of citizen-led efforts, as communities actively desilted gutters, cleared waste, and engaged in proper environmental sanitation practices,” he said.
Under the renewed programme, National Sanitation Day will be observed on the first Saturday of every month, and is expected to mobilise individuals, households, community groups, businesses, and public institutions to clean their surroundings and maintain basic environmental standards.
Mr Mahama urged all citizens to embrace the initiative, not just as a civic duty, but as a reflection of national pride and identity.
“I urge all Ghanaians to come out in their numbers to help clean our surroundings, desilt the gutters and weed unkempt public spaces,” he said. “Let us make this a nationwide habit that reflects our identity as environmentally conscious people.”
He noted that while government institutions have a role to play, sustainable cleanliness can only be achieved if citizens take ownership of their environment.
