The Minority in Parliament says it is probing the shooting incident involving the Minister-designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

This was revealed by the Ranking Member on the Appointments Committee, Haruna Iddrisu during the nominee’s vetting on Thursday.

According to the Minority Leader, the said probe is currently underway to ascertain circumstances leading to the incident and if the gun used by the nominee was registered or not as required by law.

“Back to your popular shooting case, you say that the police are investigating it, were you cautioned or charged in a statement?” Haruna enquired

Hawa Koomson then responded, “No Mr Chairman”.

“Chairman, I know that when the Hon. Agalga requested for that license documents, we want you to put weight on it because we ourselves we’re doing an investigation as a committee and therefore if she does have a copy of that license make it available to the chairman for our purposes.

"Because even the police as an extension, sometimes don’t know that they are a state institution. We will help them in the investigation. I have noted that you have said that you were not cautioned or charged,” Haruna Iddrisu revealed.

The Minister-designate today apologised for firing shots at a polling centre during the 2020 voter’s registration exercise.

Justifying her actions, Hawa Koomson said it was in self-defence, as she felt her life was in danger.

“I want to seize the opportunity to apologise to the people who were scared that day,” Hawa Koomson told the Appointments Committee of Parliament.

Subsequently in an interview with Adom TV, the former Minister for Special Development Initiative admitted to firing the shots claiming that the move was to protect her life.

At today’s vetting, a member of Parliament’s Appointments Committee, James Agalga asked if the gun the nominee fired was a license weapon, Hawa Koomson said “thank you Mr Chairman, yes the gun is mine and is duly licensed, thank you”.

“Mr chairman, are you willing to furnish us with a copy of the license?” Agalga quizzed, but the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu disallowed the request by the member since the case is currently been investigated by the police.

Another member of the committee, Alhassan Suhuyini later asked if it will be fair for the committee to defer a decision on her nomination until police conclude investigations but the chairman in response said “kindly leave that to the committee”.
