The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally endorsed Solomon Asumadu as its parliamentary candidate for the Akwatia constituency following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
Announcing the decision at a press conference on Tuesday at the party’s headquarters in Accra, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua, revealed that after several consultations and meetings by the party's elders, the National Council unanimously approved Mr Asumadu’s candidature.
Mr Asumadu currently serves as the NPP’s constituency treasurer in Akwatia and is said to enjoy broad support from grassroots members and local executives.
The endorsement comes in the wake of the sudden passing of Ernest Kumi, who died earlier this month after a short illness.
A date for the by-election is yet to be announced by the Electoral Commission, but party sources indicate preparations are already underway.
