Renowned heart surgeon and former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has launched a scathing critique of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), arguing that the party in its current form no longer reflects the principles and values on which it was founded.
Speaking in an interview, Prof Frimpong-Boateng said the organisation he once proudly served has been fundamentally distorted and now bears little resemblance to the party he knew in earlier years.
“The present NPP is not NPP. It is fake. From what I see now, this is not the NPP I used to know,” he stated.
When pressed on whether he still considers himself a member of the party, he distanced himself from what he described as its current structure.
“Not the fake one. The real one is there. It is a virtual thing. The members are in the background,” he added.
The former minister also raised serious concerns about the party’s internal democratic processes, particularly the election of its most recent flagbearer, which he alleged was undermined by coercion and inducements.
“Look at how they elected their last flagbearer—twisting people’s arms, bribing delegates and intimidating others to get a flagbearer. This is the beginning of corruption, and it should not be allowed in any serious institution or political party,” he said in an interview with Channel One TV.
Prof Frimpong-Boateng linked these internal shortcomings to the NPP’s heavy defeat in the last general elections, warning that the party risks further decline if it fails to confront its internal problems.
He cautioned against recycling past leadership without reforms, describing such a move as potentially disastrous.
While stressing that his comments were not a personal attack on former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, he added pointedly, “Bawumia is a very nice person, but being nice alone is not enough to lead Nkrumah’s Ghana.”
