The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has officially announced the establishment of its Germany Chapter (NUGS-Germany), marking a significant milestone in the Union’s mission to provide structured representation for Ghanaian students in the diaspora.

The move, sanctioned by the 59th Administration under the leadership of the President, Lawyer Rashid Ibrahim, follows a constitutional and institutional mandate to unify and coordinate the activities of all Ghanaian students globally.

In a statement released by the National Secretariat, NUGS confirmed that an Executive Committee has been appointed to lead the Germany Chapter.

The committee is headed by Mr. Patrick Sarpong, who serves as the president, alongside a dedicated team of student leaders based across various German states including Berlin, North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, and Saxony.

Operational Mandate

Unlike private associations, NUGS-Germany operates as the sole constitutionally recognized international chapter of the mother union in Ghana.

This establishment creates a direct diplomatic and administrative link between the Ghanaian student body in Germany, the Ghana Embassy in Berlin, and the Government of Ghana.

“Our goal is to ensure that no Ghanaian student in Germany is left behind,” the statement read.

“NUGS-Germany will serve as the primary liaison for academic advocacy, welfare issues, and the protection of student rights under German immigration laws.”

Welfare and Professional Growth

The new chapter has already outlined a robust agenda for the 2026/2027 academic year, including:

• Legal & Visa Advocacy: Specialized guidance on § 16b of the German Student Residence Act and updated work permit regulations.

• The NUGS Opportunities Desk: A dedicated portal for internships, scholarships, and professional networkingwithin the German labor market.

• Mentorship and Skills Development: A coordinated hub for Alumni and German scholars to support current students in integrating the German educational and professional environment

Official Recognition

The National Secretariat has called on all Ghanaian students in the 16 states, university international offices, and stakeholders in the Federal Republic of Germany to recognise NUGS-Germany as the official representative body for Ghanaian students.

The Union also announced that all recognised executives will be issued official NUGS Institutional ID Cards to curb misrepresentation of unauthorised entities and allow for the smooth operation of the diaspora chapters.

NUGS says it is in the process of formally informing relevant stakeholders including the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign affairs, the Ghana Embassy in Berlin, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Accra, the DAAD office IN Accra among others.

The Union emphasised that this formalization is part of a broader “One NUGS, One Voice” strategy aimed at ensuring that the standards of excellence and welfare support enjoyed by students in Ghana are extended to those studying abroad.

A rollout of an official NUGS International Student ID cards in liaison with the Ministry of Education and Foreign Affairs is expected in the coming months to provide all executives withverified student representative status.

Students are encouraged to connect with the official NUGS-Germany Secretariat via their verified professional channels.
