Parliament presided over by Speaker Alban Bagbin, through a voice vote by the Minority MPs rejected the 2022 budget presented by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.
The budget rejection happened in the absence of the Majority Caucus the Majority group staged a walkout over what they described as “bias” from Speaker Alban Bagbin during a voice vote for the approval of the budget.
The majority later called the budget rejection by Parliament ‘unconstitutional’ and urged the public to treat the decision as null and void.
However, the Majority Group in Parliament’s next sitting on Tuesday presided by the 1st Deputy Speaker also went ahead to approve the budget which was earlier rejected by the Minority in their absence.
The NDC MPs argue that First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu could not count himself as Member and had no legitimate right to partake in the voting process since he was presiding over proceedings on Tuesday.
The back and forth of the issue has created some dramatic twists and turns in Parliament. A situation that has created lawlessness in Parliament’s Chamber.
Joy News’ Emefa Apawu will tonight engage the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu as they try to unravel and suggest solutions to the controversy surrounding the 2022 budget.
