The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said the Minority MPs will not support the approval of the new loans tabled before Parliament by government.
According to the party, the country’s debt levels are record high and cannot be sustained.
The National Communications Officer of the Party, Sammy Gyamfi, has said.
He noted that the Akufo-Addo government cannot be allowed to destroy the country with its reckless borrowings.
“This is totally unacceptable and I am happy that the NDC members on the Finance Committee of Parliament have rejected it and said they will not approve it.”
“So I know they’ll wash their hands off it and have nothing to do with it. What I can assure Ghanaians is that the next NDC government will not engage in such reckless and irresponsible borrowings,” he said on Friday, April 28.
Members of Parliament are to cut short their recess period as the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has recalled them back to the House.
The MPs are expected to return to the House for sitting on May 2, 2023, to consider what the Speaker of Parliament says is an “urgent parliamentary business.”
“In exercise of the power conferred on the Speaker by order 42(3) of the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana, I, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, do hereby direct that Parliament shall notwithstanding anything to the contrary, be recalled from recess to sit on Tuesday, the 2nd day of May 2023, at ten o’clock in the forenoon, at Parliament House, Accra, to consider urgent parliamentary business,” a statement from Parliament stated.
According to media reports, the recall is for the MPs to approve three new loans by the government.
