Vice President Prof. Jane Nana Opoku-Agyemang has paid glowing tribute to Ghana’s teachers, describing them as the backbone of the nation’s development and the true architects of the country’s future.

Speaking at the 2025 Teacher Prize ceremony held at the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho, Prof. Agyemang emphasised that teachers are not only conveyors of knowledge but also guardians of discipline, character, and values.

“Our children look up to you not only for knowledge but also for character, discipline, and values,” she said, adding that teachers are “the true architects of social mobility” who transform classrooms into launchpads for the future.

The Vice President underscored the critical link between teacher dedication and national growth, noting that “the talents, skills, and attitudes of our educators drive the 24-hour economy agenda and accelerate our overall development.” She called on teachers to continue serving with integrity, stressing that the nation recognises those who choose “service over selfishness, sacrifice over comfort, and nation-building over personal gain.”

Highlighting decades of institutional support, Prof. Agyemang praised the legacy of the late Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, who established the Best Teacher Award Scheme in 1994, observing that “over thirty years later, the scheme continues to celebrate and honour the indispensable contributions of our educators, especially those persevering in difficult conditions.”

She also lauded ongoing professionalisation and regulation efforts led by the National Teaching Council and commended collaboration between teachers, unions, and other education stakeholders.

On reforms to support the profession, Prof. Agyemang outlined initiatives such as the National Digital Teacher Training Programme, which has equipped over 60,000 educators with pedagogy, digital literacy, and inclusive education skills. She also highlighted measures to reduce stress among teachers in the secondary sector, ensure meal provision, and incorporate teacher accommodation in new schools.

Significant attention was given to teacher welfare and mental health. The Vice President cited recent training on mental health and psychosocial well-being for pre-service teachers, describing it as vital for sustaining the profession.

At the same time, she condemned misconduct in schools, affirming that “sanctions will be applied swiftly and firmly to anyone who strays from the values and standards that define our profession.”

In closing, Prof. Agyemang urged teachers to embrace innovation, mentorship, and lifelong learning, congratulating award-winning educators while acknowledging the broader teaching community.

“May God bless our teachers, guide your work, and reward your dedication as you continue to shape the future of our nation,” she said, ending her address on a note of inspiration and national pride.
