The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has cautioned against the spread of misinformation and disinformation as Ghana approaches the 2024 general elections.
She highlighted the risks such falsehoods pose to the credibility of the electoral process and the peace of the nation.
Speaking after an important Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, October 15, Jean Mensa emphasised the need for the public to rely on accurate and truthful information about the EC’s operations.
She urged all stakeholders to avoid promoting false narratives that could undermine public trust in the commission.
Madam Mensa firmly stated that the Electoral Commission does not have the power to determine the outcome of any election or make a particular candidate president.
She further clarified that the EC’s responsibility is strictly to declare the results of an election based on the votes cast by Ghanaians, ensuring that the choice of the people is respected and upheld.
“The EC can never make anybody president and I think that we all know this around this table. Therefore, we should not peddle misinformation, fake news and disinformation and give innocent citizens who do not know the process that the electoral commission can make somebody a president."
“I would like to state on this occasion and quote from Dr Hassan Ayariga that the EC can never make anybody a president. What the EC does is declare who the voters choose as their president."
“So, it is the Ghanaian voter who votes a president into being, it is not the EC that makes a president. We only declare the voters’ choice,” she stated.
