An aide to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has affirmed their trust in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) leadership and its decision to set up a committee to review the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.
Speaking on Joy FM's Newsnight on Thursday, March 20, he explained that the committee’s formation was a collective decision, and questioning its credibility would be contradictory.
“Well, first of all, the party has instituted a committee, and we trust the judgment of the party. When the party meets to take such a decision, leaders of the party are present.
"So how can we be part of a decision to constitute a committee and then come out to say otherwise?” he stated.
He, however, clarified that trusting the committee does not necessarily mean agreeing with every aspect of its report but rather respecting the process.
His comments follow Adwoa Safo’s criticism of the election review committee, in which she questioned its credibility, suggesting it was formed to push a specific agenda rather than conduct an impartial review.
She also rejected any attempt to solely blame Dr Bawumia for the party’s electoral defeat, arguing that the process appeared to be manipulated to discredit him.
Mr Tonto assured that Dr Bawumia’s team has no intention of questioning the integrity of the committee. However, they will thoroughly examine the report when it is released and raise concerns where necessary.
“What we will do is that once the report comes, we will take an extensive look at it. If we have concerns, we will address them accordingly,” he added.
