The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) says the party will not renege on its quest to ensure the Governor of Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Ernest Addison and his two deputies resign.
Sammy Gyamfi said the party has a detailed plan to achieve its objective.
Speaking in an interview with Citi FM on Tuesday, August 8, he said they will build forces together to bring sufficient pressure on “these wreckers.”
He said this will be done in accordance with the Public Order Act.
“After 21 days, if the Governor of the BoG does not resign, all the 137 MPs of the NDC, together with all progressive forces, our allies, well-meaning Ghanaians, all patriots who are tired of the recklessness of this nation-wrecking Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government will be marching in accordance with the Public Order Act to the precinct of the BoG.”
“And we will be occupying the BoG together with the media to bring to bear sufficient pressure on these wreckers. Until they resign, they will have no peace of mind,” he stated.
The NDC Spokesman maintained that the central bank is on the verge of collapse and urgent action needs to be taken to avert further losses.
“The BoG is on the verge of collapsing if not recapitalised immediately. And the IMF has appointed a police officer for the governor to ensure that they do not engage in this criminality and recklessness.”
“The BoG decided to build a $250 million head office in this time of crisis. Who does that in the middle of a crisis when you are dealing with bankruptcy?” he queried.
The Minority in Parliament has already called for the immediate resignation of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Ernest Addison and his deputies.
The Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson made this call during the NDC’s ‘Moment of Truth’ address on Tuesday, August 8 at the party’s headquarters.
“We call for the immediate resignation of the Governor of the Central Bank and his deputies within 21 days from today,” the Minority Leader demanded.
Their demand comes after the Central Bank in its Annual Report and Financial Statements revealed that it recorded a loss of GH ¢60.8 billion in 2022.
He accused the governor of incompetence in managing the bank, adding that the bank has virtually collapsed.
He claimed that the Governor has recklessly mismanaged the Central Bank, bringing it to its knees and that he cannot continue to lead the bank without being held accountable.
“Those who have led these reckless and criminal conduct, unleashed economic hardship and financial distress on the suffering people of Ghana, must be held accountable for this particular action.
"In fact, impunity of the highest order can no longer be tolerated by the suffering masses of Ghanaians. We must not allow dangerous precedents to be set for future leaders,” he added.
According to Dr Ato Forson, if the governor and his deputies do not heed his call, the NDC is prepared to act accordingly.
“We are resolved to embark on popular action to occupy the Central Bank and drive out the team of inept, callous and criminally minded mismanagers of our finances to save the Bank of Ghana,” he said.
