The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has apologized on behalf of the party for failing to retain power in the recently ended presidential and parliamentary elections.
The party lost heavily to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in both the presidential and parliamentary election held on December 7, 2024.
“On behalf of the party, from our former President Akufo-Addo, the National Chairman, our Flagbearer, and all of us to the many Ghanaians who loved the party, most especially the youth who expressed strong hope in the party and worked assiduously to help us during the 2016 and 2020 elections, we're sorry".
During an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen Show on Tuesday, January 14, Mr Kodua acknowledged the various individuals and professionals, including lecturers, businessmen and women, lawyers, and others, who provided unwavering support to the party.
“On behalf of the party, we apologize and we are sorry. We must accept our faults as a party because we have not been fair to certain individuals who helped us during that period,” he reiterated.
Mr Kodua however defended the record of the previous government, asserting that the projects accomplished under the Akufo-Addo administration cannot be compared to those of any other government, except those of Ghana's first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
He went on to highlight some of the social policies implemented by the NPP government.
However, Mr Kodua emphasized that politics goes beyond these policies, stressing that human management and interactions are the most important aspects when it comes to elections.
“That’s where we failed as a government; we were unable to carry our base along,” he added.
He called on the party to stay committed to God and seek forgiveness, citing the Biblical quotation 2nd Chronicles 7:14.
Mr Kodua expressed hope that the party would make a strong return in the next election.
“And I can tell you that the battle is still the Lord’s. The NPP will rise up again,” he said.
He urged members to stay united and channel their energies into the party's restructuring efforts. He emphasized that the setbacks faced should be seen as an opportunity to rebuild, refocus, and prepare for future battles.
