The former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo says she does not regret her statements about not opening the law school's “floodgates”.
“If we have a 100 good lawyers, it’s better than having 2 million, 6 million lousy lawyers, and if I had to do it again I will do it”, she said on Wednesday, September 15.
Justice Sophia Akuffo was speaking at the International Central Gospel Church’s Personal Development session at the church’s Abossey Okai branch [Christ Temple].
This response was triggered when a participant asked if she still stands by her statement of not opening the floodgates for the admission of students who do not meet the requirement.
She further stated that excellence saves lives, while shoddiness kills. She then likened the admission situation to that of the medical school and asked who will be comfortable if they found out the surgeon who will operate on them made it to medical school because they lowered the bar for him or her.
Background
In 2019, Justice Sophia Akuffo said no matter the expansion made, the General Legal Council will not open the floodgates for the admission of students who did not meet the requirement.
Her comment came at a time when there was a massive public concern about 128 people making it to the Ghana Law School out of the 1800 students who sat for the exams.
