The Inspector-General of Police, James Oppong-Boanuh, is expected to face the Defense and Interior Committee of Parliament on Thursday, for his officers' manhandling of protesting law students weeks ago.
James Agalga, Ranking Member on the Committee who revealed this to JoyNews says the police chief’s appearance before the House’s committee, is part of investigations into the law enforcers’ excesses against the students.
The Builsa North MP registered his dissatisfaction with explanations already given by the police for their action.
Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh speaking on Asempa FM on Tuesday, justified the decision by the officers to use water cannons to disperse the students who were protesting to demand reforms to legal education in Ghana. He was emphatic that the use of the water cannons was a timely invention to ensure the crowd did not overpower the police. The lawmaker said the explanations are not tenable, adding he expected an unqualified apology from the police chief and not further justification from him.
The Police were lampooned for the excessive use of force on law students who attempted to present a petition to the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, at the Flagstaff House in Accra.
