FC Samartex 1996 played out a thrilling 2-2 draw against Moroccan giants Raja Club Athletic in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round on Sunday, 15th September 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Mohammed Azrida headed in from a corner.
The Timber Giants responded swiftly, equalising in the 37th minute with a spectacular acrobatic effort from Francis Gyetuah.
Just before half-time, Samartex's pressure paid off. Forward Michael Ephson capitalised on a rebound from Isaac Afful’s long-range shot to give the home side a 2-1 lead.
After the break, Samartex continued to create chances but failed to extend their lead. Raja took advantage and levelled the score through a brilliant team move, finished by Mohammed Boulacsout.
With the tie now poised at 2-2, Samartex faces a tough challenge in the second leg at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca on Saturday, 21st September 2024. They will need a win to secure a spot in the group stage.
