Former Member of Parliament for Builsa North constituency, Timothy Ataboadey Awontirim, has chastised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership, claiming that the immediate past government failed to address Ghana's most pressing challenges before exiting office.
Speaking on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning show, he called out the Akufo-Addo-led governance track record and its lasting impact on the nation's stability, insisting that the NDC administration has been handed a ‘mess’ to fix.
Mr. Awontirim argued that the NPP government's eight years in power were marked by missed opportunities to fix deep-rooted economic and social issues. He asserted that the government's failure to fully address these issues has left Ghana in a vulnerable state, adding that the NDC will not imitate their (NPP) footsteps.
"The NPP should know that we don't take lessons from them. The NDC does not take lessons from a failed government. They have been in power for eight years. The things we are facing today should have been fixed by them," he said emphatically.
The former MP did not mince words, labelling the NPP administration as a "failed government" that has little to offer in terms of lessons for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He urged the Mahama-led administration to focus on fixing the mess left behind rather than entertaining advice from their predecessors.
Mr. Awontirim also accused the NPP of ignoring the long-term welfare of the nation in favour of political expediency, a strategy he believes has worsened the country's challenges. He believes if decisive actions were taken to implement policies that tackled these problems head-on, Ghana would not be in this precarious position.
His remarks underscore a growing frustration among citizens and political figures.
Meanwhile, the NDC has assured the public of resetting the country’s economic canker as promised in their 2024 elections campaign policy.
