Ghana’s national 100m record holder Benjamin Azamati will abstain from competing at the World Relays in Guangzhou, China in order to prepare for the World Championships in September.
Azamati was part of Ghana’s relay team at the Paris Olympic Games last year, as they secured an automatic slot for the World Relays.
However, the sprinter who broke Ghana’s 22-year national 100m record in March 2022 by clocking 9.90, will not run for the country until September, when the World Championships come around.
President of Ghana Athletics, Bawa Fuseini who confirmed this to JoySports, said ‘‘we have assembled our best athletes – for the World Relays, excluding Benjamin Azamati who has asked permission that he has got other things to do in preparing for the World Championships and we have given him that leave.’’
In his absence, Barnabas Aggerh, who featured for Ghana at last year’s African Games, will join Ibrahim Fuseini, Joseph Paul Amoah, Sean Sarfo Antwi and Mustapha Bokpin.
Bawa Fuseini also expressed optimism that the team has enough quality to excel at the games.
‘‘But we still have a very quality team; Fuseini, Joe Paul Amoah, Barnabas Aggerh, Sean Sarfo Antwi and they are a formidable team. We pray and we know that they will qualify for the World Chanmpiobships come September this year.’’
The World Athletics Relays will be held in Guangzhou, China from May 10 to May 11, 2025.
