The Agbozume Police in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta region is investigating a case involving the alleged assault of a young man to death over mobile phone theft.
On Monday, June 2, the remains of the young man, known as Prosper Adedea, popularly called Tagoe, were found in the neighbourhood of the Agbozume-Adawukope community.
The family of the deceased has asked the Police Service in the area to speed up the investigation and ensure the prosecution of individuals responsible for his death.
Superintendent of Police at the Agbozume Police Station, Paul Kudiewu, in an interview, urged the public to support the investigation by providing credible information that could lead to the arrest of all involved.
"We have intensified our efforts and call on the public to assist the police in bringing all culprits to book," he said.
According to him, in the early hours of Tuesday, June 3, at about 1:00 a.m., one of the suspects was apprehended and is currently undergoing interrogation.
The Assembly Member for the Agbozume South Electoral Area, Godson Ahiamadzi, expressed deep shock over the incident. He pledged his full support to the police to bring the perpetrators to justice. "Such a heinous act is unprecedented in our community; I am truly stunned," he stated.
It is alleged that the deceased was assaulted over accusations of stealing a mobile phone from a resident in the community.
Footage recorded by some onlookers showed three men and a woman interrogating and physically assaulting the deceased.
They repeatedly demanded a confession, insisting he admit to the alleged theft. One of them was heard saying, “If you don’t tell the truth, by this time tomorrow, you’ll be dead.”
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Agbozume Hossana morgue for preservation and autopsy.
