The President of Ghana Athletics, Bawa Fuseini, believes that Abdul-Rasheed Saminu’s world-leading time in the 100m signifies that sprinting in Ghana has reached its peak.
The University of South Florida student clocked a blistering 9.86 seconds on Friday at the NCAA East Prelims to secure his place at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.
Saminu shaved 0.04 seconds off the previous national record of 9.90 seconds, set by Benjamin Azamati in 2022.
“We are very happy that he has made it this far. That is the excitement he has brought to us. As a federation, I could not be more proud to have such an athlete like Saminu.
“Bear in mind that this is the second athlete this season we have running sub-10. Azamati also made another 9.98s.
“That clearly indicates that Ghana sprinting has reached the crescendo of the world. Very soon, we will have more than three of our [individual] athletes qualifying for the World Championship, and that will put us in pole position for medal contention.”
After missing out on the World Relays earlier this month in China, Saminu is expected to play a key role for Ghana as they aim for their first-ever track medal at the World Championships in Tokyo later this year.
