The Electricity Company of Ghana operating in the Ashanti West region says one of the power transformers which was damaged by a fire outbreak weeks ago at its Obuasi substation, is yet to be fixed or possibly replaced.
The situation has since plunged parts of the Ashanti region, particularly Obuasi and New Edubiase, into darkness, negatively impacting business and household activities.
In the late hours of Wednesday, May 21, 2025, fire tore through the power substation in the gold mining town, leaving residents without power supply for days.
The fire destroyed two of the transformers transmitting power from the Ghana Grid Company Limited to the towns.
But following a visit to the site for repairs, one of the damaged transformers was fixed to supply power to parts of the town.
According to Public Relations Officer at the ECG-Ashanti West Unit, Benjamin Owusu Antwi, the substation currently does not have its full capacity to supply power to the enclave, as it originally distributed electricity through the two transformers.
The situation is imposing technical pressures on the sole functioning transformers to provide electricity and meet the demands of the communities.
“Once the original design was that the two transformers were sharing the load, it is impossible for one transformer to supply power in the area. So the power outage in Obuasi is largely because one of the damaged transformers is yet to be replaced,” he noted.
But the ECG is assuring residents of Obuasi and New Edubiase of frantic efforts to restore power supply, as engineers at both the ECG and GRIDCo work assiduously to resolve the problem.
