Lawyer and Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of capitulating to pressure from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in its handling of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, July 5, Mr Bentil said that the Commission’s sudden reversal on its earlier position to declare results pending security clearance suggests it is acting out of fear of political consequences.
He claimed that the commissioners are afraid of losing their jobs and have changed course under duress from the ruling party, "I think they are afraid of the NDC, they are afraid to do the things that they themselves have decided to do."
He cited what he described as an open threat made by the NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who took to social media to strongly criticise the EC. "Because somehow, they want to avoid what Asiedu Nketia has said openly, that they believe they must be removed. Whether you boil it or you fry it, the NDC will remove you."
Calling for accountability, the IMANI Africa Vice President urged the three commissioners of the EC to resign, stating that their perceived lack of independence risks damaging public trust in the electoral process.
