The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has revealed that the Ministry of Trade is developing a mobile application to provide transparent pricing and locations of spare parts across Ghana.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr Nikpe explained that the initiative aims to address drivers’ complaints about the high cost of spare parts, which previously hindered efforts to reduce transport fares.
He noted that the government successfully negotiated a 15 percent reduction in transport fares last year. However, many drivers resisted further reductions, citing high spare parts prices driven by dollar instability.
“The Trade Ministry plays a crucial role because drivers need access to spare parts for repairs. Last year, we achieved one of the highest reductions in transport fares in the country, negotiating a 15% decrease with our transport unions.
However, drivers were initially reluctant to lower their fares due to the high costs of spare parts, which were affected by the rising dollar. Now that the dollar has stabilised, we expect this to reduce spare parts prices. Fuel prices have also shown some stability recently,” he said.
Mr. Nikpe explained that the proposed app will allow drivers and vehicle owners to easily check the prices and locations of spare parts, promoting transparency and fair pricing in the market.
He added that, together with efforts to retool state transport agencies such as Metro Mass Transit and STC, the initiative will help sanitise and decongest cities while improving traffic flow.
The minister also highlighted collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority to implement a nationwide road safety campaign aimed at enhancing safety for both commuters and drivers.
