Former Energy Minister and New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has urged careful planning as the party considers reforms following its 2024 electoral defeat.
He emphasised the need for strategic, well-coordinated efforts to rescue the NPP and restore its strength without repeating past mistakes.
In a statement, Mr Agyarko warned against the over-centralisation of power within the party, noting that similar reforms in 2009 led to one individual dominating the organisation.
"We must strive to avoid the situation where we repose total trust and confidence in one man who will then seize the party and treat it as if it were his personal property and the rest of us as his minions to be tread underfoot," he stated.
He also called on party members to critically examine the type of political organisation the NPP aspires to become.
Mr Agyarko stressed the importance of creating a party focused on nation-building for the benefit of all Ghanaians, rather than one controlled by a cabal seeking to transfer public wealth into private pockets or functioning as a cult of personality.
"We must ensure that our efforts this time round create a party of like-minded men and women in pursuit of building a nation for the benefit of all rather than an organisation hijacked by a cabal to transfer public wealth into private pockets or worse still, a cultic organisation that in supine impotence bows to the whims and caprices of an individual," Mr Agyarko remarked.
The former minister also highlighted the need to learn from the party’s history to avoid repeating mistakes that lead to stagnation.
He urged the NPP to build on its past achievements rather than starting over after each setback.
Acknowledging the challenges facing the party, Mr Agyarko described the 2024 election loss as a clarifying moment for the NPP, providing an opportunity for meaningful reflection and action.
He urged the party to proceed with diligence and unity, focusing on restoring its principles and strengthening its commitment to serving the nation.
