Senior political science professor at the University of Ghana has cautioned politicians to be circumspect in their criticism of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.

According to Professor Ransford Edward Gyampo, attempts to dent her capability by passing snide remarks about her candidature will be risky to the political career of the perpetrators.

His comments follow after former president Mahama unveiled her as his running mate in the upcoming election.

“I have seen some attempts on the part of some political party people to rush to run the selection of Naana Opoku-Agyeman down. I think what we have to do as a people is not to rush to run people down.”

“Criticism of her selection in my view should be based only on issues. You commit a needless political suicide and a display of political immaturity by making nasty comment that can amount on attack on womanhood,’ he said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Monday.

Some hours after the candidature of Prof Opoku-Agyeman was announced, governing NPP said the choice is an indication that Mr Mahama does not take Ghanaian electorates seriously.

Communications Director of the NPP, Yaw Buaben Asamoa in his congratulatory message to her said her performance while holding the office of Education Minister is proof that she is not the best person for the job.

Meanwhile, Ransford explained that Ghanaians do not condone an open attack on women hence, an attempt to do that will be in poor taste.

“If you do this and a critical mass of women decide to counteract by forming a constituency in support of their own then your electoral fortunes will experience a curling effect,” Prof Gyampo warned.

However, he applauded John Mahama’s choice.

“I think he has the mandate of the people to serve as the flag bearer. In my view if he thinks that the one who will be able to partner him effectively to help him win is Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, then the choice he’s made is good,” he said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is a veteran educationist and the first female first Vice Chancellor of a public university of Ghana after she was appointed to head University of Cape Coast (UCC) in 2008.
