Drogba influenced my decision to play for Gabon – Aubameyang

Gabon International, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says the influence of former captain of Cote d’Ivoire, Didier Drogba is the reason he chose to represent the Panthers.

In an interview with France24, Aubameyang recounted the significant impact Drogba's career had on his own ambitions, particularly during his formative years.

"Drogba… When I played in Dijon (2008-2009), I lived with my best friend and my mother, and a DVD was released on Drogba, his career, his time at Olympic Marseille," Aubameyang shared.

This DVD, "Didier Drogba, The Incredible Destiny," published in 2007 by L'Equipe, left an indelible mark on him. "I watched him over and over," he admitted, captivated by Drogba's journey and his remarkable rise in football.

Drogba’s career trajectory was particularly inspiring for Aubameyang. "I said to myself: 'It's crazy, he explodes at 30.'"

This coincided with the time he was at a crossroads in his own national team career.

"At that time, I had to make my choice for Gabon. But in fact, I didn't hesitate, it made me want to do the same thing, what he represented for his country, it was an incredible source of inspiration."

Aubameyang's decision to represent Gabon was deeply influenced by Drogba’s example. Seeing how Drogba became a national icon for Ivory Coast, Aubameyang aspired to have a similar impact for Gabon. "Didier Drogba, The Incredible Destiny," instilled in him a sense of purpose and pride, driving him to follow in Drogba’s footsteps.

While Aubameyang acknowledges the inevitable comparisons to Drogba, he remains humble and realistic about their differences. "I think there is no comparison possible: Drogba remains Drogba. It's a legend. Afterwards, I am very happy and very proud that people think about it. But we are two completely different players. He is the legend, and I want to continue writing my story," he stated.

Aubameyang also had the chance to express his admiration directly to Drogba. "I had the opportunity to tell him that he was my idol when I was younger. I don't know if he realises it but he is someone who has inspired a lot of people around the world, particularly me, in my career and my African journey. He inspired a generation with his talent and his work."

Didier Drogba led Ivory Coast to the 2006 World Cup in Germany and South Africa in 2010. He played in two AFCON finals.
