Reigning champions Bibiani GoldStars begin their title defence at Dun’s Park on Saturday when they face Bechem United in the opening round of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League (GPL).
The Miners, fresh from lifting the GHALCA Top Four trophy, look well-equipped for another strong campaign after strengthening in all areas.
Goalkeeper Kwadwo Osei Bonsu has been brought in to compete with Emmanuel Kobi, while the attack has been reinforced with proven scorers Sampson Eduku, Prince Opoku Agyemang, Emmanuel Agyenim Boateng, and Burkinabé forward Sanou Razack.
In midfield, the likes of Francis Twene, Emmanuel Fosu Kyei, Emmanuel Kontor, Emmanuel Agyei, and Emmanuel Kojo Addy are expected to play crucial roles once again.
Frimpong Manso’s men dominated Bechem United last season, winning both home and away without conceding.
However, the Hunters will be determined to flip the script under their new head coach, Stephen Desmond-Issah Botchway, who is targeting a winning start to his tenure.
Botchway’s key man will be new signing Aminu Mohammed. The versatile forward, once on the books of Manchester City, has endured injury setbacks in recent years but sees this move as a second chance to revive his career. His fitness and sharpness will be crucial if Bechem are to upset the champions.
Bechem’s last victory over Gold Stars came in March 2023, a 2–0 win at home. Since then, the hunters have taken 2 points in 4 Premier League games against the miners. (2 draws, 2 losses)
The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League officially starts on Friday, September 12, with Hearts of Oak hosting newly promoted Hohoe United at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Kick-off time for Bibiani GoldStars and Bechem United is scheduled at 15:00 GMT
