The Ghana Premier League produced more one-sided results on matchday 2 after a surprising number of draws on opening day.

Title favourites Asante Kotoko, Aduana Stars, Hearts of Oak and Medeama all failed to win while Great Olympics are the surprise league leaders.

Legon Cities produce first managerial casualty of the season

Last season, it took just one game to get the news of a managerial exit. Kim Grant was shown the door by Hearts of Oak after losing his first match of the season against Berekum Chelsea, sending shockwaves among neutrals and fans.

Legon Cities have started the unfortunate trend this season after just two games. Goran Barjaktarevic was given his marching orders after the Royals suffered a humiliating 3-0 loss to Great Olympics at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Bosnian’s exit seemed inevitable after a poor record during his time in charge. Legon Cities’ defeat to the Oly Dade boys proved to be the straw that broke the camel’s back. In 17 games, Barjaktaveric’s side recorded three wins and lost six. It translates to a poor 17.65% win rate.

His sacking may open the floodgates to even more casualties in the coming weeks.

Fans still go to stadiums despite Sports Ministry ban

Before the start of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season, Sports Ministry made a decree; no fans are allowed to enter stadiums.

It was an update on the previous 25% stadium capacity rule set by the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo.

With COVID-19 cases rising rapidly, the ministry made the move to prevent further spread. They made an exception for journalists, allowing a maximum of 100 to enter each matchday venue.

But fans have been disobedient.

Techiman Eleven Wonders have been referred to the GFA Disciplinary Committee after fans were captured at their home against Ebusua Dwarfs last Friday.

Fans were also spotted at venues such as Theatre of Dreams (Dreams v Medeama), Golden City Park (Berekum Chelsea v Asante Kotoko) and Accra Sports Stadium (Hearts of Oak v AshantiGold).

Kotoko not playing like contenders

In the buildup to the season, Asante Kotoko were tagged favourites to win the league trophy after doing some good business in the summer transfer window.

The likes of Emmanuel Keyekeh, Latif Anabila, Razak Abalora and others were brought in to add firepower to Maxwell Konadu’s side.

Unfortunately, they have dropped points in their first two games. In the first game, they surrendered a one-goal advantage against Eleven Wonders. On matchday 2, Emmanuel Clottey’s vicious free-kick saw the Porcupine Warriors record another 1-1 draw after holding a lead for most parts of the game.

A key feature of champions is finding ways to win games consistently and the Kumasi-based club have not been doing a fantastic job on that front.

They have won seven games out of their last 16 league matches but in that run, they have recorded three defeats and six draws.

It means Kotoko have dropped a whopping 27 points out of 48 since the start of last season. If they continue dropping points in the next round of matches, it will undoubtedly hurt their chances of becoming champions.

Great Olympics promising so far

In the truncated 2019/20 season, Great Olympics started poorly, losing their first three games. In this season, however, they snatched a 1-1 draw from Medeama in their first game and impressed spectators with a commanding 3-0 win over Legon Cities at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Their performances so far has earned them first place on the league log, a position that seemed impossible to achieve in the previous season.

Oly Dade have played with a lot of confidence so far and could have scored more in their opening two matches.

Although it is too early to call, Olympics seem to possess the quality and determination to secure a top-four spot when it is all said and done. They are on the right path and should keep going till the end.

No away win yet

There has been a belief among fans and pundits in the last few years that away wins are usually hard to come by in the league. This matchday and the previous one has solidified that belief.

In the 17 Ghana Premier League games played so far, no team has recorded an away win. In the first matchday, an astonishing seven draws and one home win was recorded. The second matchday recorded five home wins out of a possible nine with four draws.

With the competition progressing thick and fast, it looks like we will have to wait a while longer for any team to clinch the first away win of the season.
