Amnesty International has urged the Ghana Police Service to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the Wa flogging incident in order to arrest more culprits.

Twenty-five persons were arrested by the Police Service yesterday for disrupting peace and destroying property in the town.

The 25 individuals were part of a group that allegedly flogged two lovers for filming their sexual act, which was leaked and circulated on social media.

In an interview, the Coordinator of the Human Rights Agency, Samuel Agbotsey noted that “everyone who witnessed the flogging must be arrested.”

He suggested that, if at all feasible, witnesses present “at the flogging scene should be made to sign bonds to never participate in that kind of activity.”

This, he explained will serve as a deterrent to others, adding that those who are punished will also caution others to flee such activity.

“They will call those who are engaged in it to order and tell them that this is wrong. This could happen to anybody. This is what we are expecting the Police to do,” he said.

Also, the Vice-Chairperson of the Defence and Interior Committee in Parliament, Ophelia Mensah has condemned the flogging of the two lovers.

According to her, such acts by the people of Wa is "not pleasant, it is an abuse of their rights and I know some of the human rights advocates will take care of it."

Speaking to JoyNews, she asked the irate youth to refrain from violence and allow the Police to do their work.

“I know the Police will conduct an in-depth investigation into that. We trust our security services to do that and then they will come out with the perpetrators," she said.

On Tuesday, May 31, the lovers were reportedly beaten because they were seen in a sex tape that had gone viral on social media.

According to the young men, it was wrong for them to have filmed their sexual act.

They were therefore punished for tarnishing the reputation of the town and for engaging in an act that is frowned upon by Islam.

The Police subsequently arrested three persons in connection with the flogging of the lovers who filmed their sexual act, but the arrest angered the youth of Wa.

On Wednesday, June 1, some protesters thronged the Wa Police Station demanding the release of three persons who had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Amidst chanting the angry youth blocked roads, burnt tyres, and pelted stones at officers on duty in the quest to get their demands met.

Meanwhile, the 18 protestors out of the 25 who were arrested yesterday evening for disrupting peace and destroying properties, are set to appear before the Wa District Court on Thursday.
