In a startling assessment of his own party’s current state, the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu—famously known as Joe Wise—has called for a radical shift in leadership style akin to that of their political rivals.
Speaking on Asempa FM's Ekosiisen show on Friday, January 23, 2026, the veteran legislator and former First Deputy Speaker warned that the NPP is suffering from a discipline deficit that is driving loyal members into the arms of the rival National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The General Mosquito Blueprint
Mr. Osei Owusu did not mince words when pointing toward the opposition as a model for order.
He argued that the NPP needs a National Chairman who possesses the iron-fisted and consistent approach of the NDC’s Johnson Asiedu Nketiah (General Mosquito) to stem the tide of internal chaos.
“What I have seen myself is Asiedu Nketiah. He is the one who has made the [NDC] party attractive. He doesn't have to say it, but then it's visible. If you are there and you want to misbehave, he will deal with you,” Joe Wise stated.
Asked by the show host if the NPP needs a party leader like Mr Asiedu Nketiah to change their fortunes for the better, Mr Osei Wusu answered in the affirmative.
A Party in Attrition?
The lawmaker’s comments come at a sensitive time for the NPP, which is currently navigating the fallout of a difficult 2024 general election and preparing for the January 31, 2026, flagbearer primary.
He noted that the lack of internal cohesion has made the NDC appear more "stable" and "inviting" to disenfranchised supporters.
“It got to a point where most people were leaving the party to join the NDC, and the numbers keep increasing. So maybe there is someone attracting them,” he observed.
The Case for Boakye Agyarko
In perhaps his most controversial suggestion, Joe Wise proposed that the NPP should move away from the "uncertainty of elections" for its chairmanship.
He advocated for a search-and-appoint model to find a leader capable of ruthless discipline, explicitly naming former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko as the ideal candidate.
Mr Agyarko, who recently declared his interest in the NPP National Chairmanship, is seen by Joe Wise as a figure who could command the same respect required to unify the party’s warring factions.
“If Boakye Agyarko says he will lead the party, I will stop what I am doing and support him. He is the person who can bring the discipline and everything we need right now to bring everyone back to the party,” he added.
Mr. Osei Owusu’s "no-election" proposal has already triggered debate within the party, with some arguing that skipping internal polls would be undemocratic.
However, Joe Wise remains adamant that the survival of the NPP depends on a return to strict hierarchy.
“To bring the appeal back, we have to restore discipline. I believe that if we continue with elections, we won’t get the person we need at this time. We should focus on searching for the right person and prepare to put the party in their hands,” he concluded.
