Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dennis Fiakpui, Oti Regional Deputy Commander, has cautioned that neglecting dependents is a criminal offence punishable under Section 42 of Ghana’s Criminal Code (Act 29).
He said this during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
ACP Fiakpui stated that parents, guardians, and caregivers are required to provide necessities such as food, clothing, medical care, and shelter for their dependents, noting that failure to do so constitutes an offence.
He also encouraged women to report abusive husbands and urged men to likewise report violent partners, stressing that violence was unacceptable regardless of gender.
He advised victims to seek help and report cases to the Police to ensure justice.
Mr. Eric Bungumi Agbo, Krachi East Municipal Coordinating Director, highlighted the far-reaching impact of GBV, saying it affected not only victims but also the economy and future generations.
He stressed that the Krachi East Municipality and the Oti Region deserved peace, prosperity, and progress, achievable through justice and mutual respect for women.
